Top Ten: RPG Boss Battle Music

What can I say? I love Role Playing Games. I love Boss Fights. I love video game music. Combine all three and you’ve got a lot of love.

I’ve played a fair share of my RPGs. I’ve listened to a lot of songs. Here is my top ten list of the absolute best RPG boss themes, according to me. … And I’m never wrong. However, I’m always free to change my mind. In an effort to keep some variety, I’ve only included one song per game. There are certainly tons and tons of great battle songs in many of the games listed here.

Video Game Music Essentials #1: Chrono Trigger

Going through the old video game backlog, and I’m replaying Chrono Trigger…again (have to be at least seven playthroughs by now), and I’m still blown away by the music of this game. So what could I do to celebrate it? Why…create an online OST of course!

You can find the entire (well my favorite songs!) OST here.

I’ve used the power of Youtube embed code to display each song next to the track, and I even added auto replay support! Yay! Now all you have to do is set it and forget it! Go get your Chrono Trigger on!

Piano Spotlight: Final Fantasy Dissidia

Final Fantasy Dissidia. The Final Fantasy fan’s dream game. It’s still kind of hard to imagine that this game exists, but…it’s Square, they do like money. I can’t blame them.

So much fan service and cool little extras in this game that the hardcore fan can just eat up. Looking forward to the sequel. Honestly, it’s the only PSP game on the horizon that I’m interested in! Anyway…the music is just beautiful. 80% of it is made up of remixes from older games (certainly not a bad thing!), but original tracks like this are very solid.

Piano. That’s it. That’s all you need. Enjoy.

Music From Games No-one’s Played

Ahh, the SaGa series. Oh, how I wanted to love you! I’m a stat whore. I love managing stats and raising levels, but this game was crazy. Absolutely nuts. This is easily one of the most complex RPG series’ ever made. I literally gave up playing SaGa Frontier 2 after I reached a boss I couldn’t beat. But….

…other than that, it sure has a kick-ass boss theme! It invokes feelings of happiness, despair, and anger all at the same time! Very rare to find a song like that. Do you agree?

Why isn’t this game here yet Nintendo?

Today’s music comes from the, yet to be released in America, Wii game, Xenoblade. Why on Earth this game does not have a U.S. release date is beyond me. From everything I’ve seen of the game, it is  absolutely stunning. Hurry up and set a date on this game Nintendo!

I don’t really know what to say about this song. It blows me away. I could listen to it for hours…days (I have). Piano and violins. I love it.

Welcome to the New Year!

I love music. I most especially love videogame music. It’s simple, it can loop infinitely, and it is the most varied genre of music out there. It can be 8-bit, it can be hard rock, it can be techno classical; truly, you can find anything that strikes your fancy if you look hard enough. Most of it is non-lyrical, so you can get whatever emotion you want out of it. I loves it! Whether you like videogame music or not, without music in general, life would be cold, empty, and boring. Can’t we all agree to that? I just happen to find this kind of music the most soothing. I hope to one day make my own. Ah, but enough about my dreams…

Every week I plan on posting a selection of my favorite videogame music. Today we have something that’s apropos for this time of year.  “Memories of the City” is a song that plays during the new year in PERSONA 3; one of the best RPGs of the last decade. Without spoiling anything, things don’t turn out that great at the turn of the calendar, and what we have here is a very melancholy song that gives you a slight glimmer of hope. Hey, isn’t that what New Year’s is all about?! The chance at having a great year, but in reality it will most likely end up sucking? I kid, I kid……sort of……just kidding! Not really.
